A "must have" if you want your fires to start on the first try
I live in the Northeast and burn wood daily to heat the house from late September - early April. I put some newspaper on the bottom of my fireplace, and then put some kindling with one of these squares on top of the kindling. Then two pieces of "fatwood" (also sold on Amazon), then fire wood on top of all of that. In the last two years, this system has not failed to start a fire every time. I just light the newspaper on the bottom and walk away. 5 mins later, a roaring fire.

Works well
I only need one square per fire, so i think they are great.

The one that works.
I have been using these fire starters for years and opted to try a cheaper brand. Shame on me! The Rutland brand has the proper density and composition to start seasoned wood every time. Match starting, quick ignition and good duration of burn. A very good product.

Good for lighting charcoal - but needs time to ignite
Once lit, they last a solid 5+ minutes to help light your charcoal in a chimney. But to get it lit, you will have to use a lighter or torch and hold it to the edge, not the top of the block. And it will take up to 15 seconds to catch. So it’s a bit slow. Very little bad smoke from the igniter but the charcoal will vary.

Great fire starters
My package arrived open on one end. The sealing tape didn't hold it closed. Fortunately all the 9roduct was in the box. This was more expensive to buy on line than in the store. I only bought it on line because u was out and the local stores are stocking things for springtime and weren't carrying these right now, I love these for starting my Woodstock fires, but I'm going with a pellet stove for next year and won't be needing these anymore. . Great product 5 stars, maybe 3 stars for the shipping tape .

Solid size, breaks cleanly...
Great fire starter for my Kamado grill. Breaks apart cleaning every time, easy to light, and lasts plenty long to make sure the charcoal is lit.
