Simple but effective 'tipping bucket' design.
I have been building an experimental weather station with a Raspberry Pi single board computer and wanted to add a rainfall measurement facility. This unit is a replacement for a commercially available home weather station, but was just what I was looking for. It contains a funnel at the top which collects rain and directs it to a see-saw arrangement that collects water in a trough on one arm of the see-saw until it weighs enough to tip over. Then the trough on the other arm of the see-saw collects water until it is heavy enough to tip over. Each time the see-saw tips one way or the other, a small magnet passes by a reed switch, causing it to close momentarily.I've connected the unit to a couple of GPIO pins on my Raspberry Pi and this counts the pulses. Each pulse from the unit is equivalent to 0.28mm of rain, so my software scales the count accordingly before displaying the rainfall readings.

Does what it says on the tin.
Works pretty well and the lead has now been reduced to a sensible length making fitting it much easier and tidier. My last unit gave up after three years of constant use and it's great to be able to buy the separate sensors.
