Proper book to learn about management
I don't know much about management, and this book was a perfect introduction. It is ideal for someone working in a firm scaling quickly, but the main messages also pertain to any management role. I learned a lot.

Not Smart Talk, Practices That Work
Simply put, we need more management books like this. In brief, this is a real world textbook on general management. A book of practical resources. See pages 129-139 concerning structuring a QBR. No hype here. No fluff. No smart talk. Rather, operating practices and processes documented that work. Obviously, this work is not instant coffee, just sir and mix. Rather, these practices need to be tailored and adapted to local situations. That is the artistry of management. What I call the bricolage work at the heart of managing in real time. Indeed, that designing and tailoring to need is the hard to get right work. It is at the center of effective management and excellent advisory work. Sadly, often not well described. More tacit knowledge than theory driven. I think it is more a craft, not an algorithm. That said, this book will not teach you bricolage skills but it is an excellent and practical resource book that will help thoughtful managers be more disciplined and systematic at building operating capabilities.

operating handbook for people managers
This book delivers on the promise of its title. It is well-written and designed. I liked the QR codes the reader can scan to read through articles referenced on a page. As the title suggests, it is a management and company building handbook. The author uses her experience at Google and Stripe to tell stories and share examples. I think this book’s strength is that it does not overgeneralize. It goes into sufficient depth to expose the plumbing of a well-run organization. You should not consider this book if you prefer poetry or platitudes on the virtues of leadership. It is a down-to-earth handbook on what it takes to run a professional organization. This book is about operating systems on people management and leadership to grow equitable and fair organizations. I liked that the author takes a systems perspective. The author shares examples of leadership actions through her experiences and leadership quotes from people and books that have influenced her thinking. But what makes the book stand out is its thoroughness. As I read through the book, I would often wonder, “But then what about?” and then the book delivered by offering a systemic take on how organizations can counter-balance people and systems’ tendencies to skew. One way to use this book is to consider it an architectural blueprint for organizing people management systems. The book focuses on hierarchical organizations, the dominant structure for most companies. People managers in these organizations may feel compartmentalized and caught up in the day-to-day. I strongly recommend this book to people managers to understand systems that influence their people and their behavior. It will help you to drive change and break from set managerial routines. Overall, the book also applies to legacy organizations that want to outgrow their past.

Literally my bible while scaling a company
This book is just simply amazing. I use it constantly to check myself, to get another opinion, to help me articulate a problem or honestly to motivate myself when I'm feeling like "is it all worth it?" Claire must be an amazing business leader and sounds like an incredibly thoughtful human. What a wonderful book to put out into the world!

I can’t put it down! Invaluable for high growth small businesses too
Invaluable!!!! I’m a second generation small business owner of a high growth family business (in an industry that has not changed for decades and is changing very quickly now due to technology). I’ve been focused on scaling our systems and processes (I’m a systems engineer), but scaling our people in a meaningful way has been a blind spot for me until this book. Book covers systems, process, people and more. I’ve learned SO much from Scaling People, I can’t put it down and am excited to implement these principles with our leadership and management team. I’ve heard Claire say in podcasts that most people won’t read this in one sitting because it’s more of a resource, but I disagree.. for those who are hungry to learn and grow from one of the best Operators in the business, I highly recommend this book. Thank you to Stripe and Claire for making this accessible to small businesses like ours.
