Know this before you buy!
Okay, so you've read the reviews and now you are as confused as I was. With reviews ranging from 5 stars and 'excellent' to 1 and 'worthless' how do you know if it's any good? I was sceptical, but I decided to order it on the basis that I would probably end up sending it back. Anyway, here's what you need to know...1 – It's clearly not pro spec, but it is solid enough, stable and worth £202 – this is important - you must have a drill with a removable handle or the collar won't fit3 – a heavy drill works better because the springs are quite strong - my big Bosch drill worked well4 – it is capable of very accurate and precise results if you set it up properly - I drilled 200 x 3mm holes in series using a wooden block fixed to the base as a guide. I marked each hole accurately with a precise pin prick and managed to drill each hole exactly on point every time. All the holes were straight and true. I made my own depth stop to fit to the drill bit and drilled to 8mm deep.5 – the secret to accurate drilling is to set the drill bit to almost touch the workpiece. You do this by fitting the locking ring ABOVE the drill collar so that you can push the drill down and lock it in position just where you want it. Don't have any gap between the drill bit and workpiece otherwise you won't drill on target. Other reviewers used this locking ring is a depth stop. However, it's better to use it to position the drill/drill bit tip as close to your workpiece as possible. If you don't do this you will not hit the target accurately. If you need a depth stop make your own or mark the drill bit with tape. So, that's it. It's not perfect, but it far exceeded my expectations. It's not as precise as a pillar drill would be, but you can achieve excellent results if you are careful and set it up correctly.

It's drilling but with stabilizers!
I love DIY but my drilling technique is terrible! Problems I encounter when drilling include the bit slipping or moving away from the location I want to drill and drilling perpendicular holes. When this happens, I end up with enlarged holes and screws going in at angles. This is especially true when drilling into walls. Perhaps my eyes are on wonky or maybe its weak wrists - who knows? - The point is - this wonderful attachment solves all my drilling problems and guarantees me a near perfect hole every time. I've even used it to drill dowel holes as in the photo and was very pleased with the result. It attaches very easily to my old Bosch corded power drill which has a keyed chuck, attaching just behind where the handle accessory does. I've seen a lot of modern cordless drills with a key-less chuck that don't seem to have the same body design behind the chuck so please check your drill before purchasing this item because it wont work.I should say though, that I am a DIY-er - and NOT looking for a professional result and I don't think this product would be suitable for the professional market. There is a little movement in the drill that could cause your hole to be about 1mm off centre if not careful and the plunge action is not particularly smooth. Be sensible with your purchase and understand that a product like this is going to have it's limitations and is not a replacement for a good bench mounted drill mount or router etc. Having said that - I wouldn't be without one now.

Extremely useful and well designed
This is another of those items that I have unconsciously wished for, for the last thirty odd years of skating drill bits. Very well designed and made of appropriately gauged metal, it is a portable pillar drill, that is light enough to be carried everywhere, (being so easy to disassemble and reassemble), and used, (in a pinch), one handed. It produces a nicely vertical hole, in anything, to a, (reasonably), reliably accurate depth. Being able to drill pipe, and strip materials accurately is a real bonus.Drop the plunge bars arond the ends of the workpiece, (I lock them with a couple of ratchet clamps), and nice, predictable, dowel holes are produced. Use it with a couple of packs of Silverline 733252 8 Piece Dowel Point Set, and produce perfect dowel joints, every time. Deservedly, a five star product.A couple of points to mention; When assembling or after moving the plunge bars, make sure that it is re-assembled and locked on a flat, even surface, to ensure verticality.Similarly, whenever the drill is placed into the collar, make sure that the whole assembly is squared off. I use a plumb bob, (but my wife always accuses me of being a bit, 'belt and braces').The stand will allow angled drilling, by extending the plunge bars through the base. Be aware however of the limitations. Vertically you've got about 125mm of travel. At 30 deg, you have about 95mm. 45deg gives 65mm but by 60deg the travel drops to about 19mm. So it's not really a replacement for a pocket jig.Good, reasonably priced and well delivered. You'll wonder how you managed without one.
