I have a degree in piano performance but had to have hand surgery. This Czerny volume is really helping me get back my velocity. Yay!

Can't win at the Piano without Hanon and Czerny...
As a teacher since finishing college (music major) 1964 and a past member of the National Guild of Piano teachers I require Hanon and Czerny of even my beginners. I don't take pupils younger than 12 and in the 6th grade and have a "B" average...any less is a waste of my time and their time and their parents money. Just my opinion...and I have been teaching a VERY LONG TIME. Students younger and without the "B" average as a rule find the instrument TOO BIG and the grades indicate whether they will have to drive to stick with it because they get frustrated...and I don't teach for money. If parents want to give their children music...start them in Choir or a band insturment that doesn't require legs long enough to reach the floor and a through knowledge of fractions and hands too small to reach an octave. And you can say a hemi demisemiquaver and have them understand it almost instantly without having to explain a quaver (in music) to them.

A jewel
I just love my Czerny! With only 3 months of tuition as an adult beginner, I hankered for something a bit less mechanical than Hanon. The first exercise captivated me, but it has taken me a month to master it. The second is again stretching me to my rookie limit, but it has such charm that I am motivated to wrestle with it even though it's probably more appropriate for someone with at least a year of experience. Highly recommended because these exercises are beautifully constructed and carefully fingered. My only complaint is that the sometimes the fingering 4 looks like a 1 due to the typography (hence four stars instead of five) but don't let that put you off.

Worth it
They provide a great foundation for building your piano technique.

Good practice exercises
Great book for practicing scales in song format (as opposed to simply practicing scales.)
