Q: can i hook up a surround sound system ?

You can output the sound from the projector's headphone jack, but that output will be analog and stereo, not Dolby Digital. Your surround processor probably can derive some sort of surround signal from that stereo source, like Dolby pro logic, but not Dolby Digital full surround.

Q: Can you plug this to a 220 volts?

if you watch the video closely, at the back of this projector its written 100-240 volt.

Q: How great is the display (picture)?

I wouldn't buy it. It overheats and functions don't work really. I got the manufacture's probection, which was probably about 4 feet, but it doesn't matter because I couldn't see my images.

Q: When I use the vga input my speakers no longer get sound?

If you want to use a extral speaker, you need to connect it with projector through 3.5mm headphone jack.Hope this suggestion could help you!
