Ideal Kutrimmer 1038 Paper Trimmer

First off, the cutter arrived in a box that had been soaking wet, then dried before delivery. The cutter was in the box fully assembled, but with minimal instructions in the booklet. I wasn’t sure if the cutter originally came assembled and that I had gotten someone’s castoff item, or if it was in original condition. That said, it seemed to operate as expected.I did contact the seller, who was a middleman for a different vendor, and they were right on top of my complaint and questions. The middleman was the pits. After 4 weeks of negotiations, I decided I would just keep the item as is.It works, doesn’t look like it was abused, and it was becoming a huge hassle for everyone except the original supplier who didn’t really care. I think I am satisfied with the seller that Amazon used, and I am happy with the cutter after I slowly figured out how to use it. Yes, it cuts well through many sheets of paper.

I bought the Kutrimmer 1038 because I've just begun to learn how to make slipcases and other boxes for books. I tried cutting binders board by hand, using a ruler and a box cutter. My cuts invariably turned out to be on a bevel that made it very hard/impossible to glue the walls of the case together accurately and firmly. Plus, it was so hard to cut the board that I was wrecking my hands.So, I started looking for a board trimmer that I could afford and would make the accurate cuts I needed. At first I considered the Kutrimmer 1134, hoping I could get by with spending less. I finally decided on the 1038 because it had the clamp.I made my purchase from MyBinding; they seemed to focus on artists' and bookbinders' needs, and had a good reputation. The 1038 arrived quickly, well-packed and needing no setup.I started using the 1038, with little success. My cuts were vertical, it's true - but I couldn't get a true rectangle out of it no matter what I tried. Clockwise trimming, etc. - nothing worked.I was ready to send the 1038 back and resort to a sort of jig I'd cobbled together to keep my cuts vertical and my angles at 90 degrees, when I decided to contact MyBinding for their thoughts on my issues.Their technician answered my email promptly (within hours). We eventually determined that the side lay (the bar at the bottom that the board to be cut rests on) of my 1038 was the slightest bit (less than .2 millimeters) out of square to the cutting bar. The error wasn't detectable on a single cut, but by the time the four sides of a rectangle had been cut, a very perceptible half millimeter error was glaringly apparent. When I tried to assemble my cases, one could see daylight through the joints!The technician told me how to adjust the side lay - it took five minutes - and my boxes are now perfect.Buy the 1038, and buy it from MyBinding - it's a great trimmer and MyBinding gives great customer service.Bonus: the 1038 is listed as having a maximum capacity of 14 3/4 inches - just short enough that I assumed I'd have to cut my 15 x 20.5 binders board down by hand, so it would fit into the 1038. Not so! It cuts 15 inches easily.Summary: I'm very very glad I bought the Kutrimmer 1038. Worth every penny.

I cannot give 5-star rating because, I did not have the opportunity to use this cutter as it was too heavy for me to lift out of the box. It was highly recommended by my instructor. One of this kind was used in the class I attended.

Exactly what I needed.

I am absolutely thrilled with this cutter! I use it for my small book making business, and it has saved me so much time and energy already. After spending hours struggling to cut through binders board, I can now cut an entire pile of book covers in just a few minutes! And having the ability to trim my paper edges has been a lifesaver - I’ve been struggling with my little Swingline for months, and now I can make straight cuts through stacks of paper easily. This has easily been my best business investment thus far.Also, it shipped much faster than expected! Amazon was a little late to notify me that it had shipped, so it ended up arriving on the day I was told it had shipped out. No complaints though, I really needed it so I was happy to have it here so quickly!

This is the best cutter we have ever purchased. It stays sharp, and we use it for paper, up to film, up to polyester, and it cuts all with ease.
