Good culture
Worked well! Got rich thick yogurt without straining. The flavor was mildly tart and creamy.

Initial Investment Already Paid Off
We were spending at least $40/month on yogurt. He likes the blended, I like the Greek with fruit on the bottom. On a whim, I tried making the Greek yogurt from this starter. I first used a heating pad with a programmable timer to keep the yogurt at the right temperature. When I realized how much I like it, I bought a sous vide so the pint Mason jars can be at 113° F for 12 hours. So far I've replaced my normal breakfast for a pint of yogurt with some homemade granola with dried fruit. Every trip to the store I grab an English cucumber to make tatziki. For Thanksgiving I replaced the sour cream in the mashed potatoes with the yogurt. I loved the extra twang, he did not.The cost of the yogurt starter, sous vide, and 4 pint Mason jars ended up being about $60. Having a healthy yogurt with zero added chemicals and a great taste has more than covered that initial investment. Our yogurt budget has been reduced to the cost of 2 gallons of milk per month!

Second Time is the Charm
I ordered this because I wanted an heirloom starter instead of using store bought yogurt starter every few batches. It didn’t work the first time using the package directions and I received a free replacement. The second time I used my tried and true process and it came out great! I appreciate the exemplary customer service!

Still working great for me!
I've been using this starter to make yogurt in my Instant Pot for almost two months now. It's been great! The yogurt is very flavorful and robust, and I can make it as thick as I like using a yogurt drainage bag. They also seem like a small company with very good customer service, so I recommend to give them a try!

It turned out slimy.
The yogurt turned out slimy- I couldn't strain it out. But there were still a few small specks of the dry culture that remained in the pouch, so I put some milk into the pouch and it cultured slimy again. Online sources explain that when yogurt is slimy, it is from being contaminated with 'wild yeast'. I cultured the slimy yogurt with a little vinegar. Then that turned out okay- no slime. I have continued to culture the yogurt maybe 5 generations since then and they have all been okay. I have used milk, or white flour or whole wheat flour as the medium. Yes, flour works, I read about it. They were looking into that as a cheaper alternative to make probiotics. By weight, flour to water 1:1.5 ratio.

It works!
I had an heirloom starter that I kept alive for 4 years. Unfortunately, it became contaminated during a busy time in my life and had to be discarded. I couldn’t get a new starter from my previous connection, so I ordered this freeze dried one. It works! My one tip when using freeze dried is to double your incubation time for the first batch.

terribleI
I activated this right away, following instructions on the package, put it on the yogurt setting on the dehydrator 110 degrees for 12 hours. It did not set. I have a funky, old sneaker smell, runny shake liquid.I don't know if the culture was damaged in shipping, but it is awful.
