I’m not sure I never had that problem

No, think of it as two FRS radios and each is 'push-to-talk'. You cannot listen and talk at the same time. They call this unit an "Intecom" but in reality it is a pair of repackaged FRS radios. It will do the job but there is no privacy or security.

No they plug into wall. Yes there is a call buzzer button. It is loud.

Q: Can this be connected to a solar source?

If the solar source output has standard household output consisting of 220/110v, yes.
