Q: Does anybody else have horrible battery drain? I use it maybe once a month and just had my 2nd battery die in 1 year.

Yeah happens to me aswell, but my battery lasts probably about 1-2 months max. Could be that its in a cold room but im not sure.

Q: Does this need 5v or 12v? i know it connects to usb 9pin (5v right?) but i have it connected to other 5v sources (powerbank) and this doesn't work.

This needs +5V standby from the USB 2.0 9pin header and may not work with other power source. Please also double check your power and reset switch connections to make sure they are connected correctly. The transmitter uses a pcie slot rather than a usb connection.

Q: Is the remote battery operated?

Yes and a flat watch style battery is included, at least it was in my package
