Lonely Planet's Global Chocolate Tour

Didn’t do their research
I love fine chocolate and was excited to see this book as I love to visit chocolate shops and makers wherever I travel. Sadly, this looks like it was quickly thrown together with whatever content Lonely Planet had around and not much effort was put into specifically researching chocolate spots in each country, plus the photography selections don’t do much to build excitement. What specifically do I mean? Well, this book is missing a lot of top craft chocolate makers in the U.S. that are worth visiting (eg award winners like Dick Taylor, Letterpress, Askinosie, MOKA, Fresco, and many more). It’s missing legacy chocolate makers, like Bonnat in France and terrific chocolate shops like Xocolatl in Basel. Or how about Zotter’s Chocolate Theaters in Austria and Shanghai? And what is the reason for the dearth of content for Brazil?! Really? Also, some information is utterly bizarre, such “Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate, USA: American palates can’t resist the sweet-salt marriage of peanut butter and chocolate, so naturally peanut butter’s satisfying protein hit has melted its way into hot chocolate recipes.” Huh? Where? I’ve never seen PB hot chocolate and I’ve been to dozens of chocolate shops across many states. There’s peppermint hot cocoa here, Mexican hot chocolate, and spiked cocao. Perhaps their research didn’t extend beyond Hershey World??Either LP has exhibited poor judgment (and lack of prioritization) of what to include and what to exclude, or they just didn’t bother to do their homework. I recommend leaving this book on the shelf and consulting the internet and local chocolate blogs and IG accounts to find out the best chocolate spots for your travels because you won’t be seeing the best if you rely on this book.

Bought one for a gift... And then a second for myself!
I initially bought this book for a friend but after flipping through it when it arrived, I found myself wanting to go back and read it myself! As somebody who loves traveling and chocolate, this book has given me some ideas for future trips. I love that it not only has information on chocolate production and popular chocolatiers, but it also gives recommendations for experiences nearby that you can add to your trip. My only complaint is that I've found some spelling and grammatical errors dotted throughout the book which can be annoying (hence the 4/5 star rating). But overall, this book is super fun!
