What can you really say?
I've set myself the goal of trying to read the books that are considered the greats, and this one was the first of the bunch. And while I'll admit that this probably isn't the easiest books to read, especially if you haven't been known as a bookworm the writing just kidnaps you instantly. I just HAD to read more, and for some reason, even if you've spent god knows how many pages just reading a back and forth conversation between some characters it's never boring. It's completely the opposite.Because as you go along you get so invested in every single character in the book that you get these deep feelings towards them, and they shift and change as you go along. And the main character, Rodion Raskolnikov, there are no words. I feel like I've known him all my life, and I'm not entirely sure that's a good thing. I hated him, felt sorry for him, admired him and everything in between. After I finished the book I missed him in my life. That's probably my biggest compliment for the book. It's long and difficult, there will be times where you'll think to yourself what on earth you're doing with your time, but it's all worth it.It completely holds up to everything that has been said about the book. How somebody could write this is beyond me.

Dostoevsky's interplay of societal and economic oppression and individual psychology is genius
Reading this book you can feel the protagonist descent into delirium . The hardship of the 19th century Russian city, the powerlessness of women, the amorality of the powerful, all make for an astonishing backdrop for this "detective / love story" to evolve. One of the best books I have ever read.

Back in time
Feeling like I have been travelled back in time. For character study in detail then it would be one of the best book.

It's not hard to understand why this book is a classic.
It's not hard to understand why this book is a classic. The names of the characters were, for me a small hindrance.

Great adaptation/translation
Great adaptation/translation, and I read it in original language. My 13 year old read it as a breeze. Highly recommend!
